New Research on Migraines & Chronic Pain
Research Shows Chiropractic May Ease Suffering
ATLANTA, Georgia – July 1, 2019
Recent research reported in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in helping patients with chronic pain. The research reports on a 23-year-old woman with chronic, daily neck and back pain in addition to migraines for over 10 years.
“Research is revealing that structural shifts in spinal alignment and the nerve obstruction they cause may be a factor in a number of disorders and can result in a host of health problems including migraines.” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. Other chiropractic researchers have reported on similar results in regards to migraines, chronic pain and chiropractic.
McCoy added “Vascular headaches signify a blood flow issue in the brain and the nervous system controls blood flow. If you damage or compress or otherwise interfere with the neurological structures in the spine this can have far reaching implications on the functioning of the body. Through research reports like this we are finding that correcting the structural abnormalities associated with these spinal problems reduces the nerve obstructions and people experience improvement. In this study it was resolution of chronic pain and migraines.”
The patient reported on in this study was a 23-year-old female suffering from chronic migraines and chronic, daily neck and back pain for over 10 years. Her neck and back pain were daily and constant, greatly impacting her daily activities. Daily medications did not help her.
The chiropractor examined her and found structural shifts and decreased motion in her neck, mid, low back, and pelvis. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.
The woman was adjusted by the chiropractor and she experienced complete resolution of her migraines and chronic pain following care.
The study’s authors called for additional research to investigate the clinical implications of chiropractic in this population of patients.

New Research Sheds Light on Anxiety, Depression & Chiropractic – Help for Those Suffering
ATLANTA GEORGIA – November 9, 2018
Recent research reporting on improvement in a 30 year old woman undergoing chiropractic care reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in managing people with anxiety, depression and their related symptoms. The research, reported in the Annals of Vertebral Subluxation Research, includes a review of the scientific literature supporting the role of chiropractic in mental health related challenges.
“Research is revealing that there is a relationship between abnormalities in the spine, the nervous system, brain and mental health” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. “Basic science research shows that the proper development and function of the brain relies on proper structure and movement of the spine from an early age.”
Research has shown not only that the developing brain relies on normal structural integrity and joint movement, but that complex neurochemical communication and pathways involved in helping humans to “feel good” are tied into spinal biomechanics and their related neurological pathways.
“It makes perfect sense once you understand the neurological connections between the spine, the brain and how we feel good" stated McCoy. “The seat of human emotion is the Limbic System and we know that this system extends all the way down the spinal cord. By normalizing interference there, things like anxiety and a sense of well-being are affected.”
Even beyond anxiety and depression, researchers believe that the increase in the diagnosis of such disorders as ADHD, pervasive developmental disorder, Tourette’s Syndrome, obsessive compulsive disorder and other mental health issues, have their root in a “perfect storm” of abnormal spinal development. For decades mental health specialists have strived to find an answer for patients suffering from a multitude of anxiety related disorders. We now know many naturally occurring brain and spinal cord substances play a role in both emotions, anxiety and pain reduction, leading to an increased sense of well being.
The patient reported on in this study was a 30-year-old woman suffering with a clinical diagnosis of depression and anxiety for over 8 years. She was experiencing panic attacks, had no energy, couldn't sleep and was on multiple medications to no avail.
The woman was examined by the chiropractor who took x-rays and found a loss of the normal curve in the neck, forward head posture and structural shifts in her spine. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. Nerve testing confirmed obstruction of the nerves. Following chiropractic care her depression and anxiety resolved, she was happy, had an increase in energy, her sleep improved and she was able to stop all medications for anxiety and depression.
The study’s authors call for more research on the effects of chiropractic in mental health challenges.

New Research on Rheumatoid Arthritis & Chronic Pain– Chiropractic Alleviates Suffering
ATLANTA GEORGIA – March 18, 2019
Recent research reporting on a 59 year old man who was suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and chronic pain reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in caring for people with these conditions. The research, reported in the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research includes a review of the literature on chiropractic and the care of these types of conditions.
“Research is revealing that structural shifts of the spine secondary to vertebral subluxation can be improved following chiropractic care” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. McCoy continued “This case adds to the body of scientific literature suggesting that chiropractic should play an important role in managing people with structural spinal distortions.”
Abnormal spinal alignment and posture are associated with poor general health, physical function, emotional function, social function, and bodily pain. Normal spinal alignment and movement provides shock absorption and leverage, which protect the spinal cord and nerves from the forces of gravity and other daily traumas one may encounter.
McCoy stated “Abnormal spinal alignment and posture also increase stress and strain to the nerve and blood supply of the spinal cord. This can seriously affect the nervous system.” It is a rare phenomenon for resolution of these abnormalities in the absence of intervention. However, there is literature that supports the effectiveness of chiropractic to restore a healthy spinal alignment and motion according to the research, thereby lowering the risk of chronic pain, degeneration and poor health.
The 59 year old man reported on in this study was diagnosed by his medical doctors with rheumatoid arthritis. He suffered from neck pain, headaches, ringing in his ears, foot pain, low back pain, and pain in his elbows, hands, hips, knees, legs, and feet bilaterally in addition to swollen joints. His history showed he was hit from the side in a motor vehicle accident 15 years prior, which is when the headaches and neck pain started and the joint pain in the rest of the body intensified. In the last 15 years that he has been under the care of his rheumatologist for his RA he has been treated with anti-inflammatory medications, prednisone shots, prescription pain killers, and muscle relaxers. He also had epidural steroid injections in his back two different times for pain.
The man was examined by the chiropractor who took x-rays and found structural shifts in his upper neck. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.
Following chiropractic care the patient stated his headaches and neck pain were gone, his posture was better, he was able to stop taking his medication and he rated his percentage of relief to be 90% and classified his improvement as “Excellent.”

PRESS RELEASE: New Research on Pelvic Pain During Pregnancy – Chiropractic Plays an Important Role
ATLANTA GEORGIA – April 18, 2019
Recent research reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic on a pregnant woman reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in helping pregnant women with pelvic pain.
“Research is revealing that chiropractic care can play a crucial role during pregnancy, labor and delivery” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study.
“It makes a lot of sense when you think about it” stated Dr. McCoy. “Increased mobility and/or asymmetry of the pelvic joints make the pelvic area vulnerable to pain during pregnancy. Alterations in the skeletal biomechanics result in mechanical stress leading to vertebral subluxations. Chiropractors find and correct these subluxations. We need to take advantage of this.”
As pointed out in the paper, chiropractic can play a beneficial role during pregnancy and in cases where the mother is experiencing some type of obstruction of her pelvis and related musculature that is interfering with how the pelvis accommodates the growing uterus.
“The goal is for the mother to be checked prior to the time of delivery so that these problems can be corrected beforehand” remarked Dr. McCoy adding “While this is a single case study, coupled with numerous other case studies and some larger clinical studies that have shown similar outcomes, it’s time that health care providers started taking it seriously.”
The patient reported on in this study was a 28-year-old female presenting to the chiropractor at 20 weeks gestation with pelvic pain. She experienced the same symptom during her first pregnancy after suffering a fall. The pain was getting worse and she was having difficulty with standing and walking.
The woman was examined by the chiropractor who found structural shifts in her neck and pelvis. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct. Tests were also performed to verify that her nervous system function had decreased.
After the third visit, she reported complete resolution and full mobility for the duration of the rest of her pregnancy. The study’s author called for additional research to investigate the clinical implications of chiropractic during pregnancy in women with pelvic pain.
New Research Sheds Light on Hearing & Ear Infections – Research Shows Chiropractic Can Help
ATLANTA GEORGIA – September 21, 2018
Recent research reporting on improvement in a young boy undergoing chiropractic care reveals that chiropractic may play an important role in managing children with hearing loss and ear infections. The research, reported in the Journal of Pediatric, Maternal & Family Health – Chiropractic, includes a review of the literature supporting the role of chiropractic in children suffering from ear infections and hearing loss and calls for more research in this area. The boy in the study had already undergone several rounds of antibiotics, three rounds of surgery and had his adenoids removed. All of those interventions had failed to help him.
“Numerous case studies and some clinical studies are revealing that there is a relationship between structural shifts in the spine, the nervous system and the various problems related to infections and hearing loss” stated Dr. Matthew McCoy, a chiropractor, public health researcher and editor of the journal that published the study. “These types of structural problems in the neck obstruct the nervous system and by removing the obstruction chiropractic helps improve nerve supply.”
With everything we know about the spine and nervous system, chiropractic intervention makes perfect sense in the case of a child who has chronic ear infections along with hearing loss.
“In fact, chiropractic is the management of choice for dealing with the structural and neurological aspects of these types of problems” remarked McCoy, adding “This child was experiencing significant disruption in quality of life as a result of his chronic infections and hearing loss and the medical interventions did not help. It wasn’t until the chiropractic intervention that the child improved dramatically and in a very short time.”
The patient reported on in the study was a 9½-year-old boy with chronic ear infections since the age of two. His lymph nodes were swollen and he had frequent fevers and difficulty sleeping. Traditional medical interventions were not helping. In the 7 years prior to chiropractic care he had been treated repeatedly with antibiotics, butterfly tube surgery three times and his adenoids were removed. Despite these failures his otolaryngologist recommended a fourth surgery on his ears. He could not concentrate on his schoolwork and had frequent absences from school.
The chiropractor examined the child and found forward head syndrome, decreased spinal range of motion, spinal pain, and muscle spasm. Most significantly he had structural spinal shifts in his upper neck. These structural shifts can lead to obstruction of the nerves and it is this obstruction, called vertebral subluxations, that chiropractors correct.
Following chiropractic care the subluxations reduced, his hearing improved, his ear infections and fevers stopped and the fluid in his ears was gone. He no longer needed tubes inserted in his ears, his sleep improved and school absences decreased.
The authors call for more research on the chiropractic care of children suffering from ear infections.
